Sarah Bernhardt discover Belle-île-en-Mer, accompanied by the painter Georges Clairin in 1894. Under the effect of a genuine coup de foudre, she acquired a military fort on the wild Edge of the Foals. In 1896, she built two villas less austere, to accommodate his family and his artist friends. This is the beginning of 30 years of retreats in summer to escape the hustle and bustle of paris. The days of the tragedian are punctuated by walks, the shrimp fishing or hunting. Subsequently, she made the acquisition of the farm and the manor Penhoët, where it set up a backyard, courts and irrigated gardens. She had more than 46 acres. Sick and infirm, she sells her property in 1922 and died in Paris the following year.
