Liturgy is an act of repetition – as if devotion (an unsettling and alluring act) could only manifest through reiteration. Bresson called for effects through repetition, and the repetition of images is nothing but cinema’s liturgical form – especially when the images belong to what’s most familiarly repeated: the everyday. Overlaying the sound of a bell on a bedsheet is enough for it to become a sacred vestment; to place a toy next to a donkey to make a simulacrum; to open a forest onto a chapel and make it more frightening than it already is. If we were to build a cinema beneath a church altar – what kind of films should we project there?
