From 1884 to 1982, the Carrie Furnaces in Rankin and Swissvale, PA, were among the most productive iron-producing blast furnaces in the world. First as an independent iron mill and later as part of the Homestead Steel Works, the furnaces were integral to the region's rise as an industrial power. Now designated as a National Historic Landmark, their remnants stand today as a majestic reminder of western Pennsylvania's enduring legacy. Using archival footage, photographs, and documents, along with interviews with ironworkers who once proudly labored at the furnaces, this documentary DVD tells the story of the Carrie Furnaces and their significance to the region and the world.
