The true destiny of this lovely valley would be determined by the permanent settlement of Latter Day Saint Pioneers. They endured great hardship from the long hard winters, as first experienced in the attempt to pasture church cattle herds here in 1855. Because of the lush summer grass a ranch headquarters was established here at what is now Wellsville, Utah. The cold weather and deep snow doomed that project and all but 420 of the 2,000 head of cattle starved. Differences between traditional uses of the land by Shoshone and the living requirements of pioneer settlers led to conflict. A U.S. Army military force of nearly 400 from Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City surrounded and killed more than 350 Shoshone in their winter camp near Preston, Idaho, in a battle now known as the Bear River Massacre.
