The disaster of September 11, 2001, remains present in the collective memory of a nation and of the world. This film essay does not focus on the tragedy of the event itself, but rather on something that no longer exists today—something that once existed and now survives only in the collective and individual memory of people who lost something, someone, or an image. It is now a non-reality, present only in newspapers, in tourists’ photographs, in photos of couples and families, in museums, and on social media. The requiem thus relates to its original idea of rest or repose, as a mass for the dead, connecting with a landscape that took time to take shape and that disappeared in an instant. Nostalgia also plays a central role in this essay, as it is linked to the memory of an object and to something that deeply impacted a people.
