Overview
The second major operation for the 101st Airborne Division was Operation Market Garden in September 1944. Its objective was to secure the roads west of the German border along the Rhine against German troops, thus allowing Allied armored units free passage into Germany. However, German resistance proved greater than anticipated, forcing the operation to be called off after eight days, resulting in the deaths of 2,110 soldiers from the airborne division.
