Dr. Kirsten Sadeghi‑Yekta is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre at the University of Victoria, specializing in applied theatre—a form of theatre practice used for social and cultural transformation. Since around 2015, Sadeghi‑Yekta has partnered with the Hul’q’umi’num’ Language & Culture Society and academic colleagues to create theatrical initiatives aimed at reawakening the endangered Hul’q’umi’num’ language, once spoken across Vancouver Island and surrounding regions, but now by fewer than 30 fluent speakers.
