Overview

When China’s coast collapsed in 1937, a lifeline was forced through the mountains: the Burma Road. Along it came thousands of overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia - later called the Nanyang Mechanics - returning to a homeland many had never seen to keep the war effort alive. This documentary revives their nearly forgotten story through survivor interviews, descendants’ memories, and archival footage, tracing the perilous journey from Kunming’s training grounds to the bombed‑out front. They faced disease, air raids, impossible roads, and disappearance into occupied territory; some survived only by blending into remote Yi villages. Over a thousand never returned, leaving families with no graves, only silence. The film restores the legacy of the 3,193 volunteers who kept China’s last lifeline open when the world was closing in.
